Dimebon Drug History

Dimebon (dimebolin hydrochloride) is a Russian antihistamine drug which has recently shown great success in clinical trials for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

Dimebon is NOT a new drug. Dimebon (dimebolin hydrochloride) was originally released in Russia in 1983 as an antihistamine drug. In fact, until recently, the antihistamine drug Dimebon was readily available in Russia as an over-the-counter product. When new generation antihistamines took over the market fewer people would buy Dimebon. With less interest to buy the antihistamine drug Dimebon the manufacturer quit producing it.

In Russia, the generic name for Dimebon was dimebonum. However, it is now more commonly known by the generic name dimebolin hydrochloride.

In clinical studies for the treatment of Alzheimer’s, Dimebon (dimebolin hydrochloride) has demonstrated significant improvement over placebo in all the key aspects of the disease.

Alzheimer's disease, the commonest cause of dementia, is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder that affects 25 million people worldwide and costs £17 billion each year in the UK alone.

It is well known that caring for a family member with dementia increases the caregiver's risk for depression, chronic illness, and even death. In addition to the physical and emotional tolls, families incur significant monetary costs, which increase with the progression of functional and cognitive impairment and contribute to the strain experienced by caregivers. If Dimebon proves to be as good as the phase II clinical trials indicate this drug will be a life-saver for caregivers and their loved ones.

The results of the first clinical trials involving Dimebon (dimebolin hydrochloride) in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease were published in the July 19, 2008 issue of The Lancet. The Lancet is the most reputable medical journal in the United Kingdom. The results of the clinical trials stated that “In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease treated with Dimebon experienced statistically significant improvements compared to placebo in all the key aspects of the disease: memory and thinking, activities of daily living, behavior and overall function.”

The active ingredient in Dimebon is dimebolin hydrochloride.

Other medications used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s include Aricept® (donepezil), Razadyne® (galantamine), Namenda® (memantine) and Exelon® (rivastigmine)

Dimebon is also being tested in the treatment of Huntington’s disease.
